The Book of Names by D. Barkley Briggs

[I haven't finished reading yet, because... everything! Work and school started this week, blah, blah. It's crazy. I'm hoping to finish it tonight, but if not, then tomorrow. So I'll post my review/opinion-thingy here then. In the mean time, so people have interviews with the author up, but I'm not sure all who. Just click the button and browse through the blogs on the sidebar. I know for sure Janna has an interview (and giveaway!). I haven't read it yet for fear of spoilers. But soon, very soon....]

(23, Aug 2008) Okay, I'm back! And I'm so glad my week is over. Too hectic. I don't know how I'm going to do this all year. *huffs air* But anyway.... The Book of Names. I gotta say, I love Arthurian legends. (And if you haven't read the book, ignore that. You totally didn't hear it from me.) Lawhead's Pendragon Cycle is my favorite. I think this series is going to take second place. If not first. We'll have to see. *smiles secretively*

I loved the characters! Flogg is so funny. And Sorge and Asandra.... (Ahhh... no spoilers!) I liked the use of the power of names. I especially appreciated Sorge's discussion of magic. It's a word. It's not good or evil. What you do with it makes it good or evil. Any more it seems like there is so much debate over magic in fiction. It makes me sick. I like Briggs's take on it. ;-)

And Magma, yes, loved the book! I'm so glad you talked me into joining FIRST. I can't wait to read more about the Hadyn, Ewan and the twins. Book 2 of the Legends of Karac Tor is called Corus the Champion. I can't wait! If you want to read more, check out Hidden Lands.

NavPress Publishing Group (July 15, 2008)

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Dean Barkley Briggs is an author, father of eight, and prone to twisting his ankle playing basketball. He grew up reading J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, Patricia McKillip, Guy Gavriel Kay, Stephen R. Donaldson, Ursila K. Leguin, Susan Cooper, Madeline L'Engle, Terry Brooks, Andre Norton and Lloyd Alexander (just to name a few)...and generally thinks most fantasy fiction pales in comparison. (Yes, he dabbled in sci-fi, too. Most notably Bradbury, Burroughs and Heinlein).

After losing his wife of 16 years, Briggs decided to tell a tale his four sons could relate to in their own journey through loss. Thus was born The Legends of Karac Tor, a sweeping adventure of four brothers who, while struggling to adjust to life without mom, become enmeshed in the crisis of another world. Along the way they must find their courage, face their pain, and never quit searching for home.

Briggs is remarried to a lovely woman, who previously lost her husband. Together with her four children, their hands are full.

Finished!

WOOOOHOOOOOOOO! Yes! I am sooooooo happy! (Bet ya can't tell, huh?) I have finished, finally finished, Speed Demon. It's a short story, only 15,000 words. But it's done. My first story ever, done, finished, completed.

I am so proud of myself. And of my dear Speed Demon.

And if I write the 3,700-some words I need to hit 5,000 today, I will also have written 50,000 words this year. Now I just have to do that over again in November, and I am really good.

*is so happy*

I Have a Job! (for Real)

And unlike the Wild Rose Press position (though I dearly love it) this one pays. Yup, cash money. *sighs* Finally. I won't be consistently broke!

So, yesterday, Mom and I are shopping. I'm in the dressing room. The very hot dressing room trying on a shirt and hoping to get out of the very hot dressing room as freaking fast as possible. And my cell phone rings.

I look at the caller, hoping that it's Crystal or somebody and I can just ignore her. Crap. The Library. I have to answer. So I stand in the hot dressing room, phone plastered to my ear and discovering just how impossible it is to take off a button-up shirt with said phone plastered to said ear. In case you were wondering, very.

I come out of the dressing room and go over to where Mom is standing. "It fits," I say. "And I'm hired."

She just kind of stares at me as she processes this and then immediately begins calling people. Because I'm hired. Wow.

So yet again, I'm following in my dear sister's footsteps. I swear, next job I have I am not inheriting from my sister. But for now, this is good.

Romancing Hollywood Nobody by Lisa Samson

This series is so good! Sadly I had to skip Book Two, Finding Hollywood Nobody, but the next time we go to the main library, so ILL-ing it. *grins* I need to know what happened in Texas!

Scotty is such a fun character. She's very... quirky. That's the word. And her cheese addiction makes me laugh... and seriously crave mozzarella sticks. o.O

So, I guess romance is never easy. (Except in the case of Scotty's parents, of course. Aaawww.) But that doesn't mean it can't be alot of fun anyway. Scottish accents, bagpipes and blue, blue eyes. *sighs* Not to mention a first kiss! Though, I gotta admit, even I don't know what all went on in Finding, I'm still totally voting for Seth, especially now that... Well, you'll just have to read the books. Go forth and buy! (Borrow, checkout, steal! No wait, no stealing. But read the books!)
